Two Truths and a Lie

The classic get-to-know-you game, with a big-screen spotlight.

Two Truths and a Lie is the icebreaker everyone already knows how to play — which is exactly why it works with new teams. ImprovApp runs it properly: everyone writes their two truths and one lie privately on their phone, then each player gets a spotlight round where their three statements go up on the big screen in shuffled order and the room votes on which one is the lie. The reveal flips the lie out with vote counts, and you learn that your quietest coworker once toured with a band. Spotting a lie scores big; fooling people scores bigger.

How to play

  1. 1

    Everyone writes in private

Each player types two true statements and one lie about themselves on their phone and marks which is the lie. Nobody sees anything until the spotlights start.

  2. 2

    The spotlight rotates

One player at a time, their three statements appear on the big screen in shuffled order. The spotlight player keeps a straight face.

  3. 3

    The room votes

Everyone else picks the statement they think is the lie on their phone. The spotlight player sits their own round out.

  4. 4

    The lie flips out

The reveal shows which statement was the lie, who called it (+300), and who got fooled (+200 each to the author). Then the story behind the weird truth comes out.

Example prompts

  • I once drove two hours to return a lost glove
  • I have met a sitting president
  • I can name every county in my home state
  • I toured with a band for one summer
  • I have never broken a bone

Frequently asked questions

How long does a full round take?

About a minute of writing plus 30 to 60 seconds per spotlight. A team of 6 finishes a full cycle in under 10 minutes.

Can anyone see my lie before the reveal?

No. Your statements go up shuffled, and which one is the lie stays private — it never reaches other players' screens (or the big screen) until your reveal.

How does scoring work?

Spotting a lie earns +300. The author earns +200 for every voter they fooled — so a well-crafted lie can outscore a sharp detective.

How many players do I need?

At least 3, so each spotlight has real voters. It shines with 5 to 12 people who are still getting to know each other.
