One-Word Story

Build a story together, one word per turn.

One-Word Story is a classic improv warm-up with the stage fright removed. The big screen opens a story — "On my first day the" — and players take turns adding exactly one word from their phones. The story grows live on screen, wanders somewhere nobody planned, and ends when it hits its target length. Then everyone writes a title for the mess and the room votes on the best one. It is pure "yes, and" energy: you cannot control the story, you can only make the next word count.

How to play

  1. 1

    The screen seeds a starter

A built-in opening like "The company picnic went" appears, and a shuffled turn order is dealt.

  2. 2

Add one word on your turn

Your phone lights up when it is your turn. Type exactly one word — the app enforces it — and the story updates live on the big screen for everyone.

  3. 3

    The story finishes itself

When the story hits its target length (a few words per player), it automatically moves to titling. The host can also cut a rambling story short.

  4. 4

    Title it and vote

Everyone names the finished story, then votes for the best title. Podium points for titles, participation points for every contributor, and the winning title gets read aloud with the story.

Frequently asked questions

Do players need to be funny or good at improv?

No — that is the point. One word is the lowest-pressure contribution in any game we ship. The comedy comes from the collisions between words, not from any one player performing.

What if someone takes forever on their turn?

The host has a Skip Turn control, and the story auto-finishes at its target length, so one distracted player never stalls the room.

How long is a story?

A few words per player — a room of 6 builds a 40-word story in about 3 minutes, then spends 2 more titling and voting. Run 2 or 3 stories per session.

How does scoring work?

The best title earns 1000 (then 500 and 250 for runners-up), and everyone who contributed a word gets +100 participation. Titles only win if they actually get votes.
